Since SQL type triggers aren't in the product, if one wanted to have the
database do this, would one simply write an auto-increment function and have
it fire prior to insert??

You're quite right. If you aren't using Enhydra to generate sequences,
and you don't want to use IDB's AUTO INCREMENT, then I think you'll
have to do your own sequence generation in your application.
