I think you mean porting to palm using J2ME ?
Maybe that would be nice, but - even if instantdb is very very tiny -,
don't you think it might be rather big compared to most palm apps ?
I'm also very interested in using Java on the palm, it would facilitate and
homogeneise (oups, I don't know how to write this word) development, but
for me Palm is good when it's kept simple.
Have you tried PTerm, from IBM ? (http://alphaworks.ibm.com if I remember
well).
(I hope not to be off-topic :-)
