Hi,
For a non-Java open source db, try PostgreSQL, www.postgresql.org,
I use this extensively for development and demo's etc (if you're on
a Unix platform; unsure if they've got a win version). Its got JDBC
drivers.
Also, Interbase would be a worthy adversary, www.interbase.com,
though I haven't looked at it because I wasn't convinced of its open
sourcefullness/distribution.
